Bike Workshop 101 Educates Community Kids

The “Bike Workshop 101” educated almost a dozen kids in the Raleigh area about about bikeIMG_0113 maintenance, bike safety, and healthy food choices, to help them get outside and get active as bicyclists. The workshop was a cycling education program for youth organized at the John Chavis Center by Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, in partnership with the Active Routes to School Project (Region 5), Wake County Human Services, Raleigh’s Bicycle & Pedestrian program, Wake County 4-H Youth Development, and the City of Oaks Foundation.

“This was a great IMG_0104program that helps give kids the skills to be better cyclists and to spend more time outdoors and active,” said Foundation Director Chris Heagarty, “We are fortunate to the work with these great partners on this project, and we hope it can be a model for future workshops around Raleigh.”

Now is the time that many community centers and camp programs start developing their plans for the following summer. Anyone interested in hosting a camp based on the Bike 101 Workshop model should contact Chris Heagarty at the Foundation, at 919-996-4773 or chris.heagarty@cityofoaksfoundation.org for more information.
